Writing a research dissertation or thesis can be compared to writing a novel. A novel begins with a story about the background to the research; it describes the methods used to establish facts or test hypotheses and ideas; reflects the results that were observed; and the conclusions that are drawn. Like a good novel, a dissertation should be written so that it can be read at a refreshing tempo, engaging the reader's undivided attention. To accomplish this, organise the contents of the dissertation so that they "flow" smoothly from one aspect to the next, taking particular care in sentence construction.
