Is Religion Losing Its Influence? In the 1970 survey on the subject, three adults in every four (75 percent) said religion as a whole was losing its influence on American life. In 1957, when the first of seven surveys on the subject was conducted, the percentage who held this view was only 14 percent. Reason for believing religion is "losing" ground include these: 1. People are changing - religion isn't important any more (31%). NOTE: A Gallup poll published in January 1975 shows that 31 percent now believe that religion is increasing in influence.)
